The spiritual journey, as described by great teachers throughout history, is fundamentally a journey into God's Love. This love isn't a single, static force, but rather a dynamic, two-fold connection that shapes our entire existence and spiritual life.
The first love is primordial and foundational. It is the initial, divine impulse of Will that prepared us for life's ultimate purpose: to follow the messengers and prophets sent to guide us. This is the stage of grace that simply sets the stage for our spiritual potential.
The Two Gates of Following
Once we commit to following the messengers—the central act of faith—we activate two subsequent and progressive forms of divine love. This process is beautifully captured in a famous divine Saying (Hadith Qudsi), which is one of the most frequently cited texts in spiritual literature:
1. The Love of Obligation: The initial, most direct way to draw close to the Divine is by carrying out the obligatory duties—the acts of worship and moral commands that God has made essential for us. The Saying states that God loves nothing more than for a servant to carry out what has been made obligatory. This is the solid ground of faith.
2. The Love of Supererogation: Beyond the required duties, the journey continues through the subsequent and voluntary acts of devotion—the extra prayers, charity, fasting, and good works. As the servant continues to come closer through these optional acts, a transformative shift occurs: "until I love him."
The Transformative Effect
Once God's love fully encompasses the servant, a spiritual wonder unfolds. The divine presence becomes integrated into the very fabric of the person’s being:
"Then when I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he holds, and his foot with which he walks."
In this state of deep closeness, the servant’s intentions and actions are guided by the Divine. Their prayers are answered, and their pleas for help are met. This is the ultimate fruition of the path of following.
The Signs of True Following
The essence of "following" is obedience: doing what the messenger commands and refraining from what he forbids, aligning our actions and character with his example.
Interestingly, the messengers themselves are also "following," as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) attested: "I only follow what is inspired in me…" (Qur’an 46:9).
Any extraordinary power or event that manifests through a messenger as a result of his perfect obedience to God is called a Sign (Aˉya).
For those of us who are not prophets, a similar manifestation—an action brought about through pure intention (Himma) and focused attention without direct physical means—is called a Spiritual Wonder (Karaˉma). It is a powerful indication of the soundness and truth of one's spiritual path.
The Deputy and the Purifier
The Divine Love also has a special affinity for the purifiers (as stated in Qur'an 9:108: "And God loves those who purify."). These are not just people who purify themselves, but who extend that purifying light to others, acting as God's representative (Khalıfa) on Earth.
The true Purifier, Preserver, and Protector is God. However, when a servant teaches what is spiritually necessary, deters others from blameworthy qualities, and guards them with the light of faith, they are fulfilling this role as God's deputy.
On the Day of Judgment, this purifier—the one beloved by God, specially favored with divine closeness (Walaya) and deputyship—will be a light for those around them. This highest station recognizes that every individual has been made a ruler over their own inner and outer life, responsible for purifying themselves and those under their care, demonstrating the profound trust God places in the human being.

As the divine saying has it, “I was a Hidden Treasure, and I loved to be known, so I created the creatures that I might be known.”
The Beloved's Embrace: Love, Unity, and Divine Compassion
The verse, on "He loves them, and they love Him..." (Qur'an 5:54), captures the intimate, reciprocal relationship between God and humanity. The "Friends of God" (awliya Allah) are an extensive group encompassing all prophets and messengers.
These are the perfected souls whose personal wills are aligned with the Divine Beloved's purpose. They become the primary instruments of God’s Compassion and Loving-mercy both in this world and in the higher planes of existence. An example of this powerful scriptural account is of Abraham and his sacrifice, symbolizing the ultimate surrender, trust, and loving relationship between the servant and God.
Those who are one with their Beloved become the very channels through which Divine Love and mercy flow into the world. Friends of God are living embodiment of the Muhammadan Light (Nur Muhammad), which is the primal source from which all spiritual realities draw their existence.

The Paradox of Pain: Why God Tests His Beloved
It seems a profound paradox: God loves His Friends (awliyaˉ), yet no one in this world suffers and is tested more intensely than they are—including the messengers, prophets, and their devoted followers.
If the lover doesn't cause pain to the beloved, why do the most spiritually perfected souls face the harshest trials?
The resolution to this paradox lies in the reciprocal nature of divine love and the spiritual function of the trial.
The Test of Claimed Love
The reality behind these trials stems from the verse: “He loves them, and they love Him” (Qur'an 5:54).
The Claim: When God's love is poured onto a servant, that person finds in their own soul an intense love for God. They then claim to be among the lovers of God. “There is never any trial without (some form of) pretension" or a claim being made.”
The Test: God then tests them specifically because of this claim of love. The trial serves as a refining fire, proving the sincerity and depth of their devotion.
Therefore, God's testing is not an act of indifference or malice; it is a response to the servant's declaration of love. The trial exists to validate the authenticity of their claimed love.
The Hidden Benefit of Being Beloved
Even in the midst of suffering, the Friends of God are receiving a distinct benefit from God's love, though they may not immediately recognize it.
Proof of Divine Love: God's love provides for them in ways that, paradoxically, involve the test itself. Enduring the trial and remaining faithful provides them with a profound spiritual benefit that affirms God's love for them.
The All-Encompassing Proof: The act of testing the one who claims love is itself "God's all-encompassing Proof" (Qur'an 6:149). It confirms that the one being tested is truly on the path of loving God.
Ultimately, God tests those who love Him to provide the spiritual substance and clarity necessary to make their claim of love true and unshakeable. "But God says the Truth, and He guides in the path" (Qur'an 33:4).
Cultivating Inner Peace: Two Spiritual Paths
Attaining inner peace is the universal goal of spiritual life, offering a state of equanimity that allows us to remain balanced regardless of life's unpredictable challenges. When adversity strikes, we can either let external events dictate our emotions or master our response through a cultivated inner stability.
Broadly, two main spiritual approaches guide us to this peace:
1. The Rational Path: Stoicism
The Stoic tradition offers a rational, philosophical framework centered on discerning what is within our control and what is not.
Focus on the Controllable: We should dedicate our energy to what we can influence (e.g., our actions, effort, and character) and discard worry over what we cannot (e.g., the weather, others' opinions, or global catastrophes).
Embrace Acceptance: The fundamental Stoic principle requires us to accept everything that happens—good or bad—because the world's unfolding is ultimately beyond our personal command.
This rational acceptance mirrors the Sufi concept of submission, where surrendering to the Divine acknowledges our lack of true control over external events.
2. The Experiential Path: Sufism and Buddhism
Unlike the purely rational approach, Buddhist and Sufi traditions emphasize experiential and practical paths to inner peace that go beyond mere acceptance.
